Connecting up the wings in this way opens up almost the equivalent of another floor. If your house is large enough you may even be able to partition the space into multiple rooms.
A hip-to-gable loft conversion takes 8 to 12 weeks and costs £35,000 - £50,000. It involves replacing one ‘hip’ end of a sloping roof with a vertical ‘gable’ wall.
The style works on anything, from detached homes to bungalows and can even be used to extend a previous rooflight or dormer loft conversion. However, you usually need planning permission to alter the roof shape in this way.
A Mansard loft conversion takes 16 to 20 weeks and costs £40,000-£80,000. This is the most complex type of attic conversion as it involves replacing an entire length of the roof with a flat roof and almost vertical wall.
Mansards tend to suit a wide range of homes, even mid-terraces, and are normally installed on the back of a property. It’s a major alteration, though, so you need planning permission.
